GEN CHEM: 1st quiz Flashcards
Matter is made up of what?
Particles
Particles of all matter have empty spaces between them, and are
called?
Interparticle Space
If temperature increases, Motion of particles increases too. True or False
True
Particles attract each other. True or not True?
True
anything that occupies space
and has mass.
Matter
Can come in all shapes, sizes and forms
* Particles are close together
- They cannot be compressed and cannot moved freely from place to place
- Fixed shape
- Ex. Soil, wood, chalk, chairs
Solid
Particles are close together but are not held
so rigidly in position
- Can move past one another
- They flow and take the shape of containers
- Ex. Water, softdrinks
Liquid
Far away from each other and are arranged
in a random way
- Particle move quickly in all directions
- Can fill up any container of any shape and size and can be compressed because of the far distances of their molecules from one another
- Ex. Oxygen, CO2, water vapor
Gas
Definition: The process by which a solid turns into a liquid when heat is applied.
Example: Ice melting into water.
Melting
The process by which a liquid turns into a solid when it loses heat.
Example: Water freezing into ice.
Freezing
The process by which a liquid turns into a gas.
Evaporation
The process by which a gas turns into a liquid when it loses heat.
Condensation
The process by which a solid turns directly into a gas without passing through the liquid phase.
Sublimation
The process by which a gas turns directly into a solid without passing through the liquid phase.
Deposition
