Gel Elctrophoresis Flashcards
Why would shorter ends migrate further in the gel?
Short stands move though the holes because they are smaller and fit
Why is a buffer necessary when preparing the gel?
Salt water solution that will let the electrical charges flow through the gel
Loading buffer?
Contains dye that makes the sample easy to see and makes the sample thicker
Why does DNA have a negative charge? Why is a electric charge put through it in electrophoresis
Phosphate groups on the nucleotides have negative charge making DNA negative
-negative charge is put near he DNA which repels the DNA to the positive end of the sample
Why is ethidium bromide used to treat the resultant gel?
DNA staining solution binds to the DNA and shows up under the fluorescent light
Is gel electrophoresis used solely for analyzing DNA?
Used also for separating molecule like proteins
