Tourism (and transport)
What is GDA
The GDA is a core socio Economic region in Ireland. It consists of the counties Dublin, Meath, Wicklow and Kildare. It is characterised by a strong economy and favourable physical conditions.
It is highly developed which promotes employment and a higher standard of living.
Tertiary Economic activities in the GDA
Tertiary economic activities are economic activities that provide a service.
E.g. Teaching.
Tertiary economic activities employ 80% of the workers in Ireland which is higher than anywhere else in Europe
Tourism sector and economy
Tourism sector contributes greatly to the economy of the GDA.
Tourism earns €2 billion for Dublin’s Economy.
It also earns around €8 billion for Irelands economy
Dublin being main entry point for tourists
Dublin is the main entry point for tourists, meaning that the tourism in Dublin is high.
The GDA attracts 40% of all visitors to Ireland.
In 2018, 11 million tourists visited Ireland, with the majority entering through Dublin
Dublin Airport
Dublin’s international airport, with terminal 1 and 2 make it accessible for tourists from the U.K and OthR parts of Europe.
Cheap flights by Ryanair also promote tourism to the GDA.
Climate, attractions, scenery
The regions cool temperate oceanic climate, which included regular precipitation, encourages year round tourism.
Attractions like the National Art Gallery and, the National History Museum make Dublin an Attractive place for tourists.
The surrounding counties are scenic and places of relief like Glendalough and Newgrange in Wicklow attract thousands of tourists each year.
Gov. Investment
The successful tourist industry can also be attributed to the governments successful investment in the sector.
E.g. Fáilte Ireland.
They have also invested in marketing t which has further benefitted the industry.
“The Gathering”, in 2013 for example, has encouraged more visitors to Ireland.
This led to a 13% increase in tourists form the US that year.
Transport links
GDA’s effective transport links also contribute to a successful tourism industry.
All road networks radiate from the M50 which circles Dublin City, making it easier to access the whole region.
E.g. The M1 coming from Belfast all the way around to the M11 from Rosslare Harbour.
Well developed transport network support the tourist industry with Dublin Bus, The Dart and the recently extended Luas Network.
The expansion of Dublin Airport to two terminals and the extended runway enables over 30 million passengers to arrange to Dublin every year
