GD1 Fall Semester Review Flashcards
Analogous Color Scheme
Color scheme comprised of colors next to each other on the color wheel
Complimentary Color Scheme
Color scheme comprised of colors directly across from each other on the color wheel
Split Complimentary Color Scheme
Color scheme comprised of a color, and the colors directly to the right and left of the original color’s compliment
Triadic Color Scheme
Color scheme comprised of at least three colors that are equally spaced on the color wheel
Tetradic Color Scheme
Color Scheme comprised of two or more sets of complimentary colors
Monochromatic Color Scheme
Color scheme comprised of various shades of the same color hue
Hue
Where a color sits on the color wheel
Value
The lightness or darkness of a color’s shade
Saturation
The dullness or vibrance of a color shade
Raster Graphic
Type of graphic that is comprised of pixels. Best for high-quality images and complex illustrations
Vector Graphic
Type of graphic created through mathematical equations with paths and points. Best for scalable and printed graphics
PPI
Pixels Per Inch
Pixel Density
The number of pixels per square inch in a raster image
Resolution
The total number of pixels in a raster image
Pixel
Square of color. Smallest unit of measurement in a raster image
Elements of Design
Line, Shape, Space, Color, Value, Texture, Form
Principles of Design
Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, White Space, Repetition, Movement, and Proportion
Graphic Design
The combination of visual elements to communicate a specific message or execute a specific function.
Destructive Editing
Type of editing in Photoshop that affects the original pixels in an image. A permanent form of editing.
Non-Destructive Editing
Type of editing in Photoshop that does not affect the original pixels in an image. Original image can be restored at any time.
Operating System
The most important software on a device. Acts as the bridge between a user and a device, allowing basic functions to take place
GPU (Graphics Card)
A computer’s internal component that is responsible for rendering and displaying high quality images
RAM
A form of internal storage within a computer that gives applications a place to store and access data on a short-term basis
Local Storage
A type of file storage that saves files directly to your computer.
Cloud Storage
A type of file storage that saves data on multiple servers at different locations through the internet
External Storage
Any type of file management system that is separate from both the internet and your device, such as a thumb drive.
Computer Hardware
Any part of your computer that is physical.
Computer Software
A set of digital instructions or programs that tell your computer hardware what to do and how to do it.
JPEG
“Joint Portable Experts Group” Type of raster file that uses lossy compression
Lossy (lousy) File Compression
Form of file compression that gathers data that is similar, and rewrites that information as the same. When expanded, original data is lost and new data is displayed.
Lossless File Compression
Form of file compression that is an algorithm that looks for redundancy in data. When expanded, data is remembered and no information is lost or changed.
PNG
“Portable Network Graphic,” Type of Raster File that supports transparency
AI
Native file type for Adobe Illustrator
PSD
Native file type for Adobe Photoshop
GIF
File type that supports animation options
TIFF
“Tagged Image File Format”, Type of raster file that is used for printing high-resolution raster graphics
Image Resizing
Resizing an raster image without affecting the resolution of the overall image.
Image Resampling
Artificially changing the number of pixels within an image based on the pixels that already exist within it.
UX/UI Design
Design that focuses specifically on how the user interacts with the design.
Joannes Gutenberg
Inventor of the first European Printing Press
Digital Citizenship
The act of using technology and the internet in an ethical, responsible way.
Postive Space
Refers to the main subjects in a design, or any area that is covered by objects or elements in a design.
Negative Space
Refers to “empty” spaces, or background areas in a design.
Compound Shapes
A complex shape that is created from multiple simple shapes being combined together.
Geometric Shapes
Shapes based on mathematical properties, such as squares, triangles, and so on.
Organic Shapes
Based on shapes that regularly occur in the natural world.
Creative Director
A career in the field of graphic design that oversees large scale design projects
Leads a team of designers in the creative process from beginning to end
Art Director
A career in the field of Graphic Design that is responsible for developing a visual style
Directs and organizes other designers to create a cohesive theme
Export
To save a file as a different file type
Art
The act of personal expression through creative mediums such as painting, dance, music, ect.
