Noun + participle
Participle
A word formed from a verb and used as an adjective.
Adjective
a word or phrase naming an attribute, added to or grammatically related to a noun to modify or describe it.
Adverb
a word or phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or other adverb or a word group, expressing a relation of place, time, circumstance, manner, cause, degree, etc. (ex. gently, quite, then, there)
Article
a kind of adjective which is always used with, and gives some kind of information about a noun.
Clause
A group of words containing a subject + predicate
Coordinate adjectives
are adjectives that appear in sequence with one another to modify the same noun.
Conjunction
connects two or more sentences, clauses, or parts of clauses. (ex. because, but, for, nor, so, until, when, yet)
Coordinating conjunctions
a conjunction that links two words, phrases, clauses, or sentences that are grammatically equivalent. FANBOYS - for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
Subordinating conjunctions
a conjunction that links a dependent clause to an independent clause. (ex. after, that, though, unless, except, if, since, before, where, while, when, whenever.)
Correlative conjunctions
two or more conjunctions used to link structurally identical parts of a sentence. (ex. either-or, neither- nor, both- and, if-then.)
Copulative conjunctions
are coordinating conjunctions used to denote addition. (ex. plus, also, as well as, no less, moreover.)
Disjunctive conjunctions
conjunctions used to separate two or more mutually exclusive options presented in a sentence. (ex. but, either, else, nor, other, otherwise)
Independent clauses
a clause that is syntactically self- contained. IT could stand as a complete sentence on its own.
Dependent clauses
also known as a subordinate clause is a clause that could not stand alone as a sentence.
Interjections
also known as exclamations, are words or phrases used to suddenly and briefly express strong feelings. (ex. Wow!, Ouch!, What the heck?)
Noun
names a person, place, thing, idea, action, or anything else that can be named.
Prepositions
define the relationship between two or more nouns, noun phrases, or verbs in a sentence. (ex. off, on, up, in, under, below)
Pronouns
I, me, my, mine, you, yours, he, she, it, him, her, his, her, hers, we, us, our, they, them, theirs.
Verb
A verb is used to signify the performance of an action. Every verb needs a noun to perform its action.
Infinitive
are preceded by to (ex. to fly)
Transitive verb
requires a direct object to complete the thought.
Intransitive verb
cant have a direct object. the action of the verb does not affect anything directly.
Linking verbs
a verb that links its subject to an equivalent word in the sentence. (ex. are, was, is, became, seemed)
Active voice
the subject performs the action denoted by the verb.
Passive voice
the subject is being acted upon by the verb.
