GCSE - Topic 3 - Working Scientifically Flashcards
How does a greater distance or force effect a moment?
The greater the distance/moment, the greater the moment.
What is a moment?
The turning effect of a force.
What is the equation for a moment when given force and distance?
Force x Distance = Moment
In a velocity-time graph, what does a straight, horizontal line mean?
The object is travelling at a constant speed.
In a velocity-time graph, what does a straight, diagonal line going downwards mean?
It’s decelerating.
In a velocity-time graph, what does a straight, diagonal line going upwards mean?
It’s accelerating.
In a distance-time graph, what does a straight, horizontal line mean?
The object is stationary.
In a distance-time graph, what does a diagonal line going upwards mean?
It’s going at a constant speed forwards.
In a distance-time graph, what does a diagonal line going downwards mean?
It’s going at a constant speed backwards.
What is a scalar quantity? (Definition)
Something that has a magnitude/size/quantity but no direction.
What is a vector quantity? (Definition)
Something that has a magnitude and a direction.
What is displacement?
The direction from the starting point and the length of a straight line from the starting point to the ending point.
What is the law of moments?
If the anticlockwise moments equal the clockwise moments, the system will balance.
How does the stiffness of a spring affect the spring constant?
The stiffer the spring, the greater the spring constant.
What is the limit of proportionality?
The limit of proportionality refers to the point beyond which Hooke’s law is no longer true when stretching a spring.
What is Hooke’s law?
The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force applied, provided its limit of proportionality is not exceeded.
What is the elastic limit?
The elastic limit of a material is the furthest point it can be stretched or deformed while being able to return to its previous shape.
Weight
W = m x g
Where’s = Mr. G
Weight = Mass × Gravitational field strength (G)
Work Done
W = F x s
Widow = Farted Stealthily
work done = force × distance along the line of action of the force
Force Applied To a Spring
F = k x e
Fancy = kissing elvis
force applied to a spring = spring constant × extension
Moment
M = F d
Mmmm! = Flour dumplings
moment of a force = force × distance
Distance Travelled
s = v x t
Soft = Velvet Trolls
distance travelled = speed × time
Acceleration
change in velocity = time x acceleration
a = ∆ v ÷ t
or
∆ v = a x t
Change V = at (taxes)
What is mass?
The amount of matter in an object.
What is weight?
The force acting on an object due to gravity.
What type of quantity is displacement?
Vector.
What type of quantity is velocity?
Vector.
What type of quantity is distance?
Scalar.
What type of quantity is speed?
Scalar.
What type of quantity is force?
Vector.
Define work done.
This occurs when a force moves an object for a distance.
Units for work done?
Joules.
State three factors that could affect a person’s walking speed.
Age, fitness, terrain.
State two ways in which friction on a moving object can be overcome.
Using a lubricant, smoother surfaces, make the object more streamlined.
What is terminal velocity?
When the resultant force on an object is 0, so the object falls at a steady speed.
What is the centre of mass of an object?
The point at which the mass may thought to be concentrated.
What is the typical walking speed?
1.5m/s
What is the typical running speed?
3m/s
What is the typical cycling speed?
6m/s
