GCSE - Topic 3 - Working Scientifically Flashcards
How does a greater distance or force effect a moment?
The greater the distance/moment, the greater the moment.
What is a moment?
The turning effect of a force.
What is the equation for a moment when given force and distance?
Force x Distance = Moment
In a velocity-time graph, what does a straight, horizontal line mean?
The object is travelling at a constant speed.
In a velocity-time graph, what does a straight, diagonal line going downwards mean?
It’s decelerating.
In a velocity-time graph, what does a straight, diagonal line going upwards mean?
It’s accelerating.
In a distance-time graph, what does a straight, horizontal line mean?
The object is stationary.
In a distance-time graph, what does a diagonal line going upwards mean?
It’s going at a constant speed forwards.
In a distance-time graph, what does a diagonal line going downwards mean?
It’s going at a constant speed backwards.
What is a scalar quantity? (Definition)
Something that has a magnitude/size/quantity but no direction.
What is a vector quantity? (Definition)
Something that has a magnitude and a direction.
What is displacement?
The direction from the starting point and the length of a straight line from the starting point to the ending point.
What is the law of moments?
If the anticlockwise moments equal the clockwise moments, the system will balance.
How does the stiffness of a spring affect the spring constant?
The stiffer the spring, the greater the spring constant.
What is the limit of proportionality?
The limit of proportionality refers to the point beyond which Hooke’s law is no longer true when stretching a spring.
