GCSE RECAP Flashcards
What are nucleons ?
Protons and neutrons are sometimes called this because they are found in the nucleus.
What is meant by an element?
Containing only one kind of atom
Define Electron
A negatively charged subatomic particle that orbits the nucleus and have a negligible mass.( 1/1840)
What’s an Atom
Consists of a nucleus containing positive protons and neutral neutrons, surrounded by a cloud of negatively charge electrons that move round it.
what is a compound?
Contains two or more atoms of different elements that are chemically joined together.
what is a mixture?
More than one type of atom or compound mixed but not chemically joined together
What is a neutron?
A negligibly charged subatomic particle that have a mass unit charge of one and are found in the nucleus
What is a Proton?
A positively electrically charged subatomic particle with a mass unit charge of one and are located in the nucleus.
What is a molecule?
Contains two or more atoms of the same element or two or more elements of different elements chemically joined together
Which subatomic particles are affected by electrical field?
proton- Yes is
neutron- no isn’t
electron- Yes is
what is the mass number?
n.o of protons add n.o of neutrons
what is the atomic number/ proton number?
n.o of protons
why are atoms considered electrically neutral?
Bcause they have the equal n.o of protons and electrons and so the charges cancel out resulting in a neutrally charged atom overall
what is an isotope?
When atoms of the same element have an equal n.o of protons, an equal n.o of protons but a different n.o of neutrons.
