GCSE Product design: Human Factors in Design Flashcards
What are ergonomics?
The study of people and the relationship with the environment around them. Ergonomics is about how easy and comfortable a product is to use.
What are anthropometrics?
The study of people and the relationship with the environment and products around them. Ergonomics is about how easy and comfortable a product is to use. It involves research into measurements relating to people.
What are physiological factors?
These are concerned with the physical limitations of people e.g. size, strength, levels of stamina, hand eye co-ordination.
What is anthropometric data?
These are measurements of the human body which have been put together in chart form
What is the 50th percentile?
The average or most common anthropometric measurements.
Name four factors which can influence ergonomics.
Colour, lighting, sound and comfort.
How can colour influence ergonomics?
Colour is used in many products such as power switches on a kettle and warning lights on a car dashboard. The type of colour used and different levels of light are important factors.
How can lighting influence ergonomics?
The correct level of light is important. Screens need to be bright enough to be seen in full sunlight but adjustable for night time use to prevent eye strain.
How can sound influence ergonomics?
Spoken instructions are common in products e.g. Satellite navigation, self service tills.
Background noise from machinery can affect ergonomics .
High levels of noise can be uncomfortable and can cause hearing damage
How can comfort influence ergonomics?
Products are often shaped fit part of the body.
Some products are covering with a soft material to make them easier to hold or sit on
What is inclusive design?
Designing products which can be used by anyone of any age, gender, disability, religion or taste.
What is exclusive design?
Designing products to take into account the specific needs of people e.g. the very young, the elderly, people with disabilities or religious groups.
What is a working triangle?
The area in a kitchen between the sink, fridge and cooker.
