GCSE CHEM STRUCTURE & BONDING Flashcards
What is Covalent bonding?
Covalent bonding occurs between two non metals such as hydrogen and oxygen neither have complete outer shells so they share the electrons in the outer shell
What is Ionic bonding?
Ionic bonds are formed between metals and non-metals by transfer of outer shell electrons
What is Metallic bonding?
In metallic bonding metals are held together by strong bonds in regular structures. In the metal the atoms lose several of their outer electrons which drift around between the metal ions as free electrons other wise known as delocalised electrons.
How do sodium and chlorine react?
Na + Cl —–>
2,8,1 2,8,7
When a sodium atoms reacts with a chlorine atom, the electron in the outer shell of sodium is donated to the outer shell of chlorine to make both shells complete
Non metals need to gain electrons to have a full outer shell so how can both atoms gain electrons from a bond?
They need to share electrons this is called covalent bonding
