GCP-BioPsy: Localisation of Function Flashcards
What’s the term used to to describe certain areas of the brain thought to be responsible for particular functions? e.g. vision, language, coordination.
Localisation of function.
Draw a brain from side view (left), and label the following: Motor cortex, Somatosensory cortex, Auditory cortex, Visual cortex, Broca’s area, Wernicke’s area.
See GCP p.g. 82.
What does the motor cortex do?
The motor cortex controls voluntary movement.
What is the Broca’s area do?
The Broca’s area is responsible for the production of speech.
What does the auditory cortex do?
The auditory cortex processes information from our ears.
What does the Wernicke’s area do?
The Wernicke’s area is responsible for the understanding of language.
What does the visual cortex do?
The visual cortex processes information from our eyes.
What does the somatosensory cortex do?
The somatosensory cortex processes information about touch, pain, temperature and proprioception (the position of your body).
What connects the two hemispheres of the brain?
The two hemispheres of the brain is connected by the corpus callosum.
What functions are dominant in the left hemisphere of the brain?
The left hemisphere of the brain handles the bulk of language functions because in most people, Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas are only found in the left hemisphere. The left hemisphere is also generally responsible for logic, analysis and problem solving.
What functions are dominant in the right hemisphere of the brain?
The right hemisphere is concerned with things like spatial comprehension, emotions and far recognition.
What’s the term used to describe how the two hemispheres of the brain are responsible for different functions?
Hemispheric lateralisation of function.
How do the two hemispheres of the brain communicate?
The two hemispheres of the brain communicate through the corpus callosum. It does this by passing through the corpus callosum.
In general, which hemisphere deals with information from the left side of the body?
The right hemisphere (e.g. Information from the left visual field goes to the visual cortex in the right hemisphere).
In general, which hemisphere deals with information from the right side of the body?
The left hemisphere (e.g. Information from the right visual field goes to the visual cortex in the left hemisphere). It does this by passing through the corpus callosum.
