GC Flashcards
When to use GC
For volitile cpds
Component of GC
-long columns: * packed columns: short length, long diameter
* capillary columns: long length , short diameter
Why do we place columns in the temperature
So that the uniform temperature can be maintained
Stationary phase
Made of silicone grease which can stand higher temperature
Mobile phase
Made of gas(H or N) connected to the molecular sieve which remove unwanted water or oxygen for better separation
What does elution depends on
More volatile molecules interact more with s.phase and elute first while less volatile elute later
Detector used
FID flame ionisation detector
How does FID work
Is made up of 3 inlet sample, oxygen and hydrogen, but it igniter ignites the O and N and produce a flame so when the sample molecules reach the flame they get ionised and electrons are released. Electrons are amplified by the detector which give the peak According to the retention of the sample
Why do we need long tune or column
Hype long the column the better separation
