11
Q

What is the issue with TNCs in developing countries?

A

They have high amounts of capital and can farm at a higher rate than local farmers

Local suppliers have little power so they have higher amounts of power in the food system

12
Q

How has globalisation increased obesity?

16
Q

What are the 4 human factors influencing food security?

A

Land ownership & capital
Trade & Competition
Technology
Land-grabbing

17
Q

How does Land ownership and capital influence food security?

A

In many countries land is essential as it can provide their incomes, food, water and house

If taken away then it can mean that this is at risk

18
Q

How does Land Grabbing influence food secuirty?

A

This is when another developed country acquires land in a developing country for their own food security

This takes potential land and food production capabilities away from the target country and to the investor

19
Q

How does competition influence food security?

A

Due to the increasing number of monopolies in the food market it means that their is less competition

This leads to underpaid farmers and potentially higher prices for those in developing countries

20
Q

How does technology influence food security?

A

New technologies such as new seed strains or fertilizers can be used to increase yields and reduce food insecurity

ACs can take more advantage as they have the capital to use these

21
Q

What is Malthusian Theory?

A

He argues that population grows Geometrically ( 1,2,4,8) but food was only growing arithmetically (1,2,3,4)

So population will outgrow the food production capacity until famine and war shrinks the population

22
Q

What is Boserup’s theory?

A

As we approach resource depletion it would cause us to advance to find new ways to produce enough food for eveyone

23
Q

What is a Pinch Point in the supply chain?

A

This is a place where disruption could be likely to happen

24
Q

What is desertification?

A

the destruction of of the biological potential of land, leading to a reduction in agricultural capacity

25
Q

What are 3 causes of desertification?

A

Fires
Water scarcity
Demand for Fuelwood

26
Q

What are 3 Climate change factors affecting food production and distribution?

A

Floods - more water vapour = more rain

Droughts - soil erosion

Heatwaves - one every 200 days

27
Q

How does water scarcity affect food production and distribution?

A

Less than 1% of food is useable for human use

60% of water for agriculture is lost due to poor irrigation systems

28
Q

How do tectonic hazards affect food production and distribution?

A

Volcanic ash - destroys pasture land

Earthquakes - isolated areas and supply chain

Nepal 2015

29
Q

What is malnutrition?

A

deficiencies/ excesses or imbalances in a persons energy intake or nutrients

30
Q

What are the 2 main types of malnutrition?

A

Undernutrition

Overweight/obesity

31
Q

3 Examples of undernutrition

A

Stunting

Wasting

Nutrient deficiencies

32
Q

What is a double malnutrition burden?

A

when a country is suffering from both undernutrition and also obesity
