What are the main events of chapter 2
Begins with a description of the valley of ashes
A pair of enormous eyes brood over the valley from a large decaying billboard,

Tom takes Nick to Wilson’s garage at the edge of the valley of ashes
Tom and myrtle are having an affair, Tom forces myrtle and Nick to go to the city
There in a flat they have a shrill and vulgar party with myrtle sister. They become exceedingly drunk
Shortly after Tom gives myrtle a puppy as a gift she begins chanting daisy name to irritate him
Analysis
They eyes of TJ Eckleberg are a grotesque image as they are attached to a face or body

George Wilson, myrtle rejected husband seems to be almost made of ashes
Clothing plays an important role in the development of a character, and is reflective of mood and personality
Clothing emphasises a characters superficiality
When myrtle changes to a cream coloured dress she looses some of her vitality. Like daisy she becomes more artificial, her laughter, gestures become more violently affected
Fitzgerald society is in decay
Nick caraway remains both “within and without this world” though he is repulsed b the party’s vulgarity he is to fascinated to compel himself to leave
