Q

American dream ideas

A
  • America land of opportunity if you work hard
-After horrors of war people thought this was there fresh start
  • G symbols this as he is working hard for his success (the love)
  • As his love was unsuccessful it symbolises the dream as it also failed.
  • misinterpretation of ‘pursuit of happiness’ as ‘right to happiness’ = G misinterpreting daisys love for him.
  • the dependence of the citizens on the country for happiness = g dependant on daisy for happiness

Q

Who do list links

A

(Sonnet)
“Diamonds”- objectification/ wealth/ status. Woman as accessory

“Seke to hold the wind” wind is all encompassing like speaker and gatsby obsession. Can’t hold wind. Impossibke like their love.

Extended metaphors of “green light” and “deer” to represent lover. Not humanly attainable

“Fainting I follow”- speaker chasing. Goes against Elizabethan patriarchy. Same with gatsby

Who so list 1st person narrative. Unbiased. TGG 3rd (nick) biased.

“Deer” = Anne Boleyn. Henry beheaded to keep his masculinity (toms situation)

Enjambment- tired but carries on (both)

Q

Absent links

A

Differnt to gatsby. Controls woman instead of being controlled. Looks to future women rather than past. Looks to physical connection rather than emotional.

Typical poem of the time. Satirical.

“Twill plainly kill” - open / Blaise to infidelity. Suggest no control /addiction. Link to freuds ID

“To they safe bosom I retire” - come back when he’s done. Patriarchal

“Lose my everlasting rest” - loss of heaven for his sins.

Pretended to be a gynocologist to have access to women privates = sexual obsession
