Population
The entire group of subjects.
Census
Survey of the entire population.
Sample
Part of the population surveyed.
Unbiased
Every member has an equal chance of being selected.
Statistic
A number that describes a study.
Parameter
A number describing a population.
Convenience Sample
Select subjects of the population who are conveniently ready and available.
Teacher chooses her math students for a survey.
Self-Selected sample
Selected subjects of the population who volunteer for the sample.
Systematic sample
Order the population in some way.
Simple random sample
All members of the population are equally likely to be selected.
Cluster sample
Population divided into groups, some groups are randomly selected, and either all the individuals in the selected group are selected or just some of the individuals from the selected groups are selected.
Stratified sample
Population divided into groups either way all members are selected.
Observational study
Measure, or observe subjects of a sample in a way they are not affected by the study,
Controlled Experiment
Divide the sample into 2 groups. Impose a treatment on one but not the other. Then you compare the effect on the treated to the “control” group.
Survey
Ask every subject of the sample a set of questions.
