Gathering Data Flashcards
Statistical vs. practical significance
Statistical: “Is there something there?”
Practical: “How big is the finding?”
Traits of good survey studies
Representative sample
Random sampling
Types of random sampling
Simple (randomize at individual level)
Cluster (randomize at group level)
Stratified (randomly pull out same size population from each group)
Sampling bias for surveys
Sample isn’t representative of population
Nonresponse bias for surveys
Sample was random, but not everyone participated
Response bias for surveys
People were sampled properly and answered all the questions, but answered them incorrectly
Traits of good experiments
Manipulation of at least 1 variable
Random assignment to conditions
Blinding (if possible)
Things to check when using other people’s data
Validity (good operational definition of concept)
Reliability (care with which data was taken/processed)
Confounds (other variables which could possibly explain data)
