***model for gatekeeping
In addition to academic performance, counseling students are expected to possess personal qualities, characteristics, and evidence of readiness conducive to effective therapeutic. practice.
Responsibility of graduate school:
in the code of ethics and in case law - found univ has an obligation to ensure graduates are competent.
Due process - dismissal is not arbitrary and students receive adequate notice and an opportunity for a hearing.
MODEL
(1) students are notified of the gatekeeping process in admissions packet - that they will be eval throughout program and describe means
(2) students are informed via syllabus and verbally on teh first tak of each class on the criteria on which they will be evaluated. Forms are reviewed with the student at the end of the semester.
(3) when a problem is identified - prof meets with student to affor them the opportunity to address the probem
(4) if problem is not resolved, a prof sumbits letter to dept chairperson to have st meet with faculty review committee- st can bring a representative.
Recommendations can include:
(1) student is okay
(2) student should undergo remediation
(3) student should be dismissed
4 st is informed in writing of the decision and has the right to appeal to dean then initiate legal action.

** 4 phases of gatekeeping - preadmission, postadmission, remediation plan, remediation outcome.
We gatekeep at several phases of a graduate program.
Gatekeeping - the process whereby counselor educators intervene when students are not prepared with knowledge, skills, and values necessary of the practice of counseling.
CACREP AND ACA
Remediation plans - often include personal develment and intsified supervision. Faculty are responsible for assisting st’s in remedial assistnce, proving consultaiton about and doumentation of all dissmissal and referrals and ensuring students have recourse and due process.
