Gastrointestinal inflammation
can occur from injecting food toxins
increased acid can irritate stomach as well
Treatment: remove offending agent w/ pain relievers anti-inflammatory medications + antibiotics
Pancreatitis
inflammation of the pancreas
caused by alcohol injection or gallstones
-symptoms: serve upper abdominal pain; nausea; loss of appetite
Treatment: hospital admission for IV fluids
-medications to relieve pain and inflammation
-gallbladder pancreatic=gallbladder maybe removed
Flatulence
commonly called gas
causes abdominal pain
decrease in GI motility and certain foods and dry can cause accumulation of gas bubbles in the GI tract
Treatment: simethicone (mylicon, Gas-X, Phazyme)
Cirrhosis
chronic liver failure often caused by alcoholism + malnutrition or injections, poisons, untreated viral infections -develop over large period of time -symptoms: appear abruptly -abdominal pain -vomiting of blood -jaundice -swelling Treatment: -viral injections medication -antidote for Tylenol posining -ant inflammatory medications -treatment of acute symptoms can prevent further damage
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
chronic inflammation of GT tract (ulcerative + Crohn's disease associated w/ IBD) Symptoms -diarrhea -constipation -abdominal pain -weight loss Mediations
Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUI)
open lesion or wounds in mucosal lining of GI tract (esophagus, stomach, intestine)
caused by cigarettes, alcohol, NSAIDs, aspirin, steroids, and H. pylori or untreated chronic GERD
Treatment: lifestyle modifications, meds that treat GERD
Diarrhea
watery, loose and frequent stools w/ or w/o abdominal pain
can result from various illness (colon cancer, AIDS, diabetes, certain mediations, IBD syndrome, & food toxins)
Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
- chronic but treatable
- results from smoking acid backing up into esophagus
- symptoms
- > heartburn, coughing, chest pain, difficult breathing, regurgitation
- prevented w/ weight loss, consumption of meals, avoid chocolate, alcohol and caffeine, exercise, stop smoking, upright 2 to 3 hours after meals
Constipation
- difficult or infrequent passing of stools, hard, firm, difficult to pass
- can be associated w/ other medical condition (diabetes, thyroid disorders, IBD, pregnancy)
Nausea
