Common causes of infectious diarrhoea
Salmonella enteritidis- within 12-72 hr of contaminated food or drink
E.Coli- contaminated food and dairy products known as haemorrhagic colitis
Shigella- can cause bloody diarrhoea particularly preschool
Campylobacter- most common bacterial can cause bloody diarrhoea
Intussusception clinical feature
Paroxysmal severe colicky pain Sausage shaped mass Abdominal distension May vomit Blood stained mucus in stool
Tx of Crohn’s disease
Azathioprine
Mercaptopurine, methotrexate
Anti-TNF: infliximab, adalimumab
Enteral feeds
Surgery
Tx of Ulcerative colitis
Aminosalicylate: mesalazine
Steroids
Infliximab or ciclosporin if infected
Surgery
Red flag symptoms with constipation
- Failure to pass meconium in first 24hr
- Faltering growth
- Gross abdominal extension
- Abnormal lower limb neurology
- sacral dimple, discoloured skin, hairy patch
- perianal bruising or multiple fissures
- perianal fissures, fistulas or abscesses
- Hirschsprung disease
- Hypothyroidism, ceoliac and more
- Hirschsprung
- lumbosacral pathology
- Spina bifida
- Sexual abuse
- Crohn’s disease
