What is a diaphragmatic hernia?

A

Condition in which the bowel contents herniate into the chest, most common on left side. Also presents with hypoplasic left lung and pulmonary hypoplasia

Management of diaphragmatic hernia?

A
  • Avoid high airway pressure
  • Maintain 02
  • Avoid bag and mask ventilation to prevent over distention of intestines
  • NGT to decompress stomach
  • Arterial/central access
  • stabilise until surgery

A
Excess oral secretions
Abdo distension
Frothy, white bubbles in the mouth.
Coughing or choking when feeding.
Vomiting.
Blue color of the skin, especially when the baby is feeding
