Gastro Flashcards
What is gastroschisis?
Herniation of the gut through the abdominal wall aka baby is born with its bowel on the outside.
How is gastroschisis treated?
It is either put back into the abdominal cavity straight away in one operation through the hole near belly button or if the cavity is not big enough then they will use a silo for gradual reduction. sometimes the cavity cant be closed because the skin doesn’t stretch enough and they will cover it and wait to close it.
What is exomphalos?
When babies are born with the bowel and sometimes the liver on the outside in a loose sac.
How is exomphalos treated?
If its small then it will be pushed back inside the abdominal cavity in one operation. If it is larger then like gastroschisis they will use gradual reduction using a silo.
What is NEC (necrotising enterocolitis)?
When tissue in the intestines become infected and die. Can lead to perforation and the contents of the intestines can leak into the abdomen.
How is NEC treated?
In most cases the bowel is rested by giving IV feeds and antibiotics. An NGT will also be passed to drain the stomach. If baby doesn’t respond to this or their bowel perforates then baby will have an operation to remove the dead bowel (resection). Sometimes if they need to remove a large part of the bowel then they will create stomas and baby will be on TPN longer.
What is a volvulus?
Twisting in the intestines
