Gases Flashcards
Boyle’s Law
The volume of a fixed mass of gas at a constant temperature is inversely proportional to pressure
P ~ 1/V PV = k P1V1= P2V2
Pressure
The movement of molecules in a gas results in collisions at the walls of the container giving rise to a force which we call pressure
Charles’s Law
The volume of a fixed mass of gas at a constant pressure is directly proportional to pressure
V~T V= kT
Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressure
The total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of the gases
Boiling point
The temperature for which its VP=Patm
Graham’s law of diffusion/effusion
Rate of diffusion/effusion of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of its molecular mass
