What does Dalton’s Law states?
Dalton’s Law states that a mixture of gases which do not react chemically, their total pressure is the sum of the partial pressure of the components.
How to calculate partial pressure?
Pressure of gas A = Mole fraction of A x Total Pressure
What are the assumptions of the kinetic theory?
- The gas particles have no volume
- There are no forces of attraction between the gas particles
- When particles collide the collision is perfectly elastic with no loss of kinetic energy
- The gas particles are in constant random motion
What are the two reasons for deviation from ideality?
Intermolecular forces of attraction between gas particles and volume of each gas particle relative to total volume occupied by the gas becoming moe significant.
How does low temperature affect the ideality of gases?
At low temperatures, kinetic energy of the gas particles decreases and the particles move slower. Intermolecular forces of attraction between the particles become more significant and number of collisions and force exerted on wall of container will decrease.
Why does H2O deviate more from ideality as compared to other gases at low pressures?
H2O has stronger hydrogen bonds as compared to idid and pdpd bonds hence it deviates more from ideality at low pressures.
Why does CO2 deviate more from ideality as compared to other gases at high pressures?
This is because the volume of CO2 molecule is larger than that of H2 and H2O molecules.
