What is a strict/obligate aerobe?
A
Requires O2 to grow - will survive without it but will not multiply
e.g. Mycobacterium bovis

What is an obligate anaerobe?
A
Unable to tolerate O2
e.g. Dichelobacter nodasus

What is a facultative anaerobe?
A
Has the capacity to metabolise anaerobically but prefers aerobic (more ATP)
e.g. E.coli

What is a microaerophilic or microaerobic bacteria?
A
Prefers a reduced O2 tension - will not grow in too little/too much O2
e.g. Compylobacter jejune

What is an aerotolerant organism?
A
O2 levels do not affect growth
e.g. Streptococcus dysgalactine
