gas temperature and pressure Flashcards
what is random motion
the particles dont follow a pattern, have different speeds and travel in different directions
what do gas particles collide with?
with other air particles
what is pressure
as gas particles collide with the walls of the container, they exert a tiny force
the total force of the particles is the pressure
so, pressure = force / volume
what happens to the pressure of the gas if the temp is increased and why
the increaase in temp gives the particles more kinetic energy, so they move faster and there are more collisions so more force is exerted, hence the pressure is increased
what is boyle’s law
the pressure multiplied by volume at a constant temp is always the same
what is the gas constant formula
pressure * volume = constant
this means the pressure and volume multiplied together will always be the same
what is work on a gas
the transfer of energy by a force. doing work on a gas increases the internal energy and CAN increase the temperature
what happens when a gas is squashed slowly
the temp remains constant because the heat can excape to the surroundings.
