Gas Exchange in Insects Flashcards
1
Q
What is the structure of the gas exchange systems in insects?
A
spiracles
trachea
tracheoles
2
Q
What adaptations does this gas exchange have?
A
The trachea branches off into trachioles which increases the surface area for diffusion. The tracheoles take the gases straight to the cells and are one cell thick to decrease the diffusion distance.
3
Q
How do insects limit water loss?
A
When they are losing too much water the spiracles close using abdominal muscles. This decreases the amount of water lost by evaporation through the spiracles.
