Gas Exchange in Fish Flashcards
1
Q
How are fish adapted for gas exchange?
A
- Water has lower concentration of oxygen compared to the air
- Adapted to have gills which allows them to have direct contact with the oxygen in the water
- Shorter diffusion distance and a larger surface area
- Faster rate of diffusion
- Ensures maximum oxygen for metabolic activity
2
Q
Why can fish not survive on land?
A
- Water is denser than water which provides buoyancy to the gills - decreases the effect of gravity
- If on land bouncy would decreases as air cannot supports it weight - effect of gravity increases
- Gills collapse and stick together - surface area decreases
- Rate of diffusion of oxygen would decrease
