GAS EXCHANGE Flashcards
lecture #19
What is the circulatory system responsible for?
Transports nutrients and gases through the body
How is the circulatory system functionally linked in most animals?
Linked to the exchange of gases with the environment and with body cells
What does the circulatory system transport in vertebrates?
Transports gases between the lungs and the rest of the body
What parts does the circulatory system have?
- A circulatory fluid
- Interconnecting vessels
- A muscular pump (heart)
What is the circulating fluid in open circulatory systems?
Hemolymph (mixture of blood and interstitial fluid)
What happens when the heart contracts in an OPEN circulatory system?
Pumps the hemolymph through vessels into sinuses
What happens when the heart relaxes in an OPEN circulatory system?
Draws the hemolymph back in through pores
What is the fluid in a closed circulatory system?
Blood ONLY (confined to vessels)
What costs more energy: an OPEN circulatory system or a CLOSED circulatory system?
a CLOSED circulatory system
True or False: a closed circulatory system produces a lower blood pressure
FALSE
How does a closed circulatory system allow for larger/more active animals to move?
Regulates distribution of blood to different animals
What is it?
This part carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the organs throughout the body.
Arteries
What is it?
Arteries then branch into ?
Arterioles
