What are some important points about the gardens?
There is always something in bloom.
They are maintained by professional hort staff employed by the university, and that is a good opportunity for students as well.
Displays change seasonally and are always unique
We’ve even hosted weddings in the formal gardens.
What is an arboretum?
Direct from Kathy:
A Museum of Trees is my wording - I use this because many people do not know what an Arboretum is and rather than comparing it to a park or a garden, this analogy emphasizes that our trees are part of a collection - much like the pieces of art in a museum, and just like those pieces of art our trees are curated, the collection created with particular intent and goals, just like art in a museum they are accessioned - with their own unique record, their history and notrs about what make them special, just like a museum this information is made available to the public through a variety of ways for use in research or education, and just like art pieces in a museum they are used for educational purposes and for research. Like a museum houses and protects are, the arboretum is a place where they are cared for and protected. And when a natural disaster strikes a museum it loses things that are irreplaceable - and so does an Arboretum.
