Galvanic and Electrolytic Cells Flashcards
Can Galvanic Cells have a negative standard cell potential?
No the standard potentials have to be positive.
Can Electrolytic Cells have a negative standard cell potential?
Yes, Electrolytic Cells can have either positive or negative cell potentials.
Where do the electrons flow towards in a Galvanic Cell?
Electrons flow from the anode to the cathode.
Why do electrons flow from the anode to the cathode?
Because positive cations from the anode flow through the salt bridge towards the cathode. So, the positive ions are at the cathode side and the negatively charged electrons are attracted to the positively charged ions that are at the cathode.
What is the purpose of the salt bridge?
The purpose of the salt bridge is to keep the anode and the cathode neutrally charged to prevent a buildup of charge on either side.
