empire
an extensive group of states or countries ruled over by a single monarch
enlist
enrol or be enrolled in the armed services
fire step
a step or ledge on which soldiers in a trench stand to fire.
grenade
a small bomb thrown by hand or launched mechanically
historiography
the writing of history.
home front
the civilian sector of a nation at war when its armed forces are in combat abroad.
Hun
a member of a warlike Asiatic nomadic people who invaded and ravaged Europe in the 4th–5th centuries.
