Galaxy vocab Flashcards
Galactic disc
Thin basically circular distributes of stars and gas and dust
Arms
Pinwheels within the galaxy that are made up of stars, planets, asteroids, and hydrogen clouds that reached out from the center of the galaxy two its edges
Central bulge
A central football shaped structure, composed of stars, gas, and dust
Halo
Nearly spherical volume of
Thinley scattered stars, globular clusters
and tenuous, gas, observe surrounding spiral galaxies.
Globular cluster
A large compact spherical star cluster typically of old stars in the outer regions of the Galaxy
Local group
The group of more than 20 galaxies to which the Milky Way galaxy belongs to
spiral galaxy
Typically has a rotating disk with spiral arms that curve out from a dence central region
Elliptical galaxy
A type of galaxy with aproximately
Ellipsoidal shape, and a smooth nearly featureless image
Irregular galaxy
Any galaxy that does neatly fit into one of the categories of the humble classification scheme
The big bang theory
The idea that the universe began as just a single point, then expanded, and they stretch to grow as large as today
