GAIT Stuff Flashcards
When does acceleration occur?
early swing
* period in which the trailing limb is accelerated in front of the body
When does deceleration occur?
late swing
* period in which the trailing limb is decelerated to accurately place it on the ground
identify the stages of the gait cycle.
There are 7 💅
Stance phase:
1. early stance = Heel Strike
2. mid stance = Swing limb inline with body
3. late stance = push off
Swing phase:
4. pre swing = toe off
5. early swing
6. mid swing
7. late swing
What does propulsion refer to? When do it occur?
propulsion = propelling of the body forward
occurs during the stance phase of gait during late stance and preswing/toe off
What does restraint refer to? When does it occur?
refers to restraining the body from propelling forward
occurs during early stance/heel strike and mid stance
What is the role of Rectus Femoris During GAIT?
- Produces hip flexion during swing phase to allow for the swinging of the limb
- Decelerates hip extension in late stance/preswing
What Hip muscles are active during preswing?
Hip Flexors –> Eccentrically to slow the rate of Hip extension
What muscles are active in Late swing?
- Glute max
- Hamstrings
These muscles are active ECCENTRICALLY to DECELERATE the hip flexion and knee Extension respectively of the swinging limb to prepare for the forces of the next initial contact
When is Glute Max active during the GAIT cycle?
What is its role for each?
Early Stance Phase
Active concentrically as a mover to initiate the Hip extension on the new stance limb
Mid to Late Swing
Active Eccentrically to Decelerate the Hip flexion & Stabilise the pelvis in the sagital plane (anterior and posterior tilt) to resist the high impact forces of the heel strike AND to resist the anterior pelvic tilt caused from Rectus Femoris
