Gait Deviations Flashcards
Foot Slap Cause
insufficient plantarflexion resistance in prosthetic
Hyperextension of Knee
Prosthetic cause: heel cushion too soft, heel or toe lever arm to long or too firm
Anatomical: Laxity of posterior capsule of knee
Pistoning
Prosthetic cause: socket is too large, suspension is adequate
Excessive External Rotation
Prosthetic cause: heel durometer of prosthetic foot is too long, improper socket fit
Excessive Varus
Prosthetic cause: too much inset of foot
Anatomical cause: laxity in lateral collateral ligaments
Vaulting
Prosthetic cause: too long, poor suspesion, excessive plantar flexion of foot, excessive knee friction
Drop off
Occurs between single and double limb support, weight bearing period for prosthetic side is shorter with quick knee flexion at end
Prosthetic cause: heel height is too high for prosthetic foot
Excessive Valgus
Prosthetic cause: lateral displacement of foot, inversion of foot
Hip Hiking
Prosthesis cause: too long, insufficient knee resistance
Medial whip
Prosthetic cause: external rotation of the knee, tight socket, misaligned toe break
Lateral whip
Prosthetic cause: internal rotation of the knee, loose socket, misaligned toe break
Abducted gait
Prosthetic cause: too long, medial wall too high, insufficient femoral stability
(induces medial whip)
Circumducted gait
Prosthetic cause: too long, excessive knee friction, excessive knee stability
Excessive heel rise
Prosthetic cause: inadequate extension aid, insufficient knee friction, improper knee selection
Knee instability
Prosthetic cause: excessive dorsiflexion, knee aligned in unstable position, insufficient socket flexion, malalignment of foot posterior to TKA line?
(Strengthen hip extensors, stretch flexors)
