Meaning of Sexual Harassment
any behavior of a sexual nature that affects the dignity of women and men, which is considered as unwanted, unacceptable, inappropriate and offensive to the recipient, and that creates an intimidating, hostile, unstable or offensive work environment.
Meaning of Quid Pro Quo
Is committed when an employer, supervisor, manager or co-worker, undertakes or attempts to influence the process of recruitment, promotion, training, discipline, dismissal, salary increment or other benefit of an existing staff member or job applicant, in exchange for sexual favours.
*Worst form of sexual harassment
*Covered under Penal Code
Sexual assault or rape
NOT CONSIDERED SEXUAL HARASSMENT
- If the conduct is welcome
- Occasional compliments that are socially and culturally appropriate
- Any interaction that is sexual in nature which is consensual (except sexual intercourse with minors)

*looking up and down a person’s body

What is Non-sexual Harassment?
Happens if you are harassed because you are female rather than male (vice versa)
example: if you are a female in a male dominated job
Effects of Sexual Orientation Harassment/Meaning
*interferes with an individual’s employment
*create a hostile work environment
Example of Sexual Orientation Harassment
*Make joke about gay, lesbian etc. individuals
*Asking sexual practices of gay, lesbian etc.
*Using derogatory slang about gay, etc.
*Repeatedly expressing negative opinions
*Harassing activity because of sexual orientation
Intent Vs. Impact
Assess if your behavior is appropriate by considering power dynamics, mutual participation, and how you’d feel if the behavior was public or if your partner was present.
Severe or Pervasive
Sexual harassment requires behavior that is either severe or occurs frequently enough to create a hostile work environment.
Assessing Yourself
Evaluate harassment based on how often it occurs, its duration, the number of people affected, and the presence of witnesses.
