What is saving faith? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace whereby we receive and rest upon him alone for salvation, as he is offered to us in the
gospel- WSC86
WCF 13.1- The grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of their souls, is the work of the Spirit of
Christ in their hearts, and is ordinarily wrought by the ministry of the Word by which also, and by the administration of the
sacraments, and prayer, it is increased and strengthened.
What is saving faith? Scripture proofs.
John 1.12- “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…”
John 3.16- “ For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have
eternal life…”
Philippians 3.8-9- “I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own
that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ- the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.”
Galatians 2.15-16- “man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ
Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be
justified.
Where does saving faith come from? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
Saving faith is worked in the heart by the Holy Spirit and the word of God.
Where does saving faith come from? Scripture proofs.
2 Thessalonians 2.13 “But we ought to thank God for you brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning
God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.”
Ephesians 2.8-9 “for it is by grace you have been saved, through faith- and this not from yoursleves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no
one can boast.”
What does saving faith believe? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
Believes whatever is taught in Scripture.
WCF 13.2 “By this faith, a Christian believes to be true whatever is revealed in the Word, for the authority of God himself speaking therein; and
acts differently upon that which each particular passage thereof contains; yielding obedience to the commands, trembling at the threatenings, and
embracing the promises of God for this life, and that which is to come. But the principal acts of saving faith are accepting, receiving, and resting
upon Christ alone for justification, sanctification and eternal life, by virtue of the covenant of grace.”
What does saving faith believe? Scripture proofs.
John 5.24- “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed
over from death to life.”
Romans 10.9- “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be
saved.”
Is all faith alike? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
No, there are degrees of weak and strong; saving and non-saving
This faith is different, weak and strong; may be often and many ways assailed, and weakened, but gets the victory;
growing up in many to the attainment of a full assurance, through Christ, who is both the author and finisher of our
faith.- WCF 13.3
Is all faith alike? Scripture proofs.
Hebrews 5.13-14- “Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not aquatinted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for
the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Matthew 6.30- “If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more
clothe you, O you of little faith.”
James 2.19- “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that- and shudder.”
Define “repentance.” Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
Repentance unto life is a saving grace, whereby a sinner out of a true sense of his sin, and apprehension of the mercy of God in Christ, does with grief and hatred of his sin, turn from it, unto God with full purpose of and endeavor after new obedience. WSC #87
Define “repentance.” Scripture proofs.
Acts 2.37-38 “When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “ Brothers, what
shall we do? Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your
sins.”
Joel 2.13-14 “Even now, declares the LORD, return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Rend
your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and
abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.”
. In what sense is repentance “necessary?” Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
Repentance is necessary in that no sinner may expect pardon without it.
WCF 15.3 “Although repentance is not to be rested in, as any satisfaction for sin, or any cause of the pardon thereof,
which is the act of God’s free grace in Christ; it is of such necessity to all sinners, that none may expect pardon
without it.
In what sense is repentance “necessary?” Scripture proofs.
Luke 13.3 “I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
Acts 17.30-31 “In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he
will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.
How ought we to confess our sins? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
Specifically in public or private
WCF 15.5 Men ought not content themselves with a general repentance, but it is every man’s duty to endeavor to repent of his particular sins,
particularly.
WCF 15.6 As every man is bound to make private confession of his sins to God, praying for the pardon therof; upon which , and the forsaking of
them, he shall find mercy; so, he that scandalizes his brother, or the church of Christ, ought to be willing, by public or private confession, and
sorrow for his sin, to declare his repentance to those that are offended, who are thereupon to be reconciled to him, and in love to receive him.
How ought we to confess our sins? Scripture proofs.
Luke 19.8- But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have
cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.

1 John 1.9 “ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Good works are only such as God has commanded n His Holy Word, and not such as, without the warrant therof, are devised by
men out of blind zeal, or upon any pretense of good intention- WCF 16.1
