G. Geography and Anthropology Flashcards
How large is Russia (in sq. miles)?
Six million square miles, with 11 time zones, the largest country in the world.
Winston Churchill’s famous observation of Russia…(1939)
“It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma…but perhaps there is a key.”
Churchill’s answer to the riddle of Russia he posed, seven years later…
“I am convinced that there is
nothing they admire so much as strength, and there is nothing for which
they have less respect than for weakness, especially military weakness.”
Why is Poland important to Russian geopolitical interests?
Poland represents a relatively narrow corridor into which Russia could drive its
armed forces if necessary and thus prevent an enemy from advancing
toward Moscow. Here, the vast North European Plain stretching from France to the Urals is only three hundred miles wide.
