Heterosexism
norms and behaviors that result from the assumption that all people are or should be heterosexual.
Heterosexual
a medical definition for a person who is sexually, romantically, aesthetically, sensually, emotionally, and/or intellectually attracted to members of the opposite biological sex. Often called a ‘straight person’.
Example sentence: John is a heterosexual man who is attracted to women.
Homophobia
the fear of, hatred of, or discomfort with people who identify in the LGBTQ+ spectrum.
Homosexual
a medical definition for a person who is sexually, romantically, aesthetically, sensually, emotionally, and/or intellectually attracted to members of the same biological sex.
Intersex
a medical definition for a person born with chromosomes, genitalia, and/or secondary sexual characteristics that are inconsistent with the biological understanding of a male or female body.
Lesbian
a woman who is sexually, romantically, aesthetically, sensually, emotionally, and/or intellectually attracted to other women.
Non-binary
an umbrella term for people whose gender identity doesn’t sit comfortably with ‘man’ or ‘woman’.
Orientation
an umbrella term describing a sense of identity based on the person’s attraction to other people, or lack thereof.
Outing
when someone reveals another person’s sexuality or gender identity to an individual or group without the person’s consent or approval.
Pansexual
a person who is sexually, romantically, aesthetically, sensually, emotionally, and/or intellectually attracted to others regardless of gender identities/expressions or biological property.
Queer
a term (sometimes used as a negative slur) describing people who are non-normative in terms of gender identity, sexual orientation, or sexual anatomy.
Questioning
the process of exploring one’s own sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
Sexual identity
the type of sexual, romantic, physical, and/or spiritual attraction one feels for others.
Spectrum
a term used to cover a variety of identities that have a root commonality or shared experience.
Transgender
a blanket term used to describe all individuals whose gender identity does not align with their biological sex. Can be trans-man or trans-woman.
Transphobia
discomfort/fear/hatred of people who are transgender or gender non-normative.
Transitioning
the process of moving from one sex/gender to another; gender reassignment.
Identity
is how you, in your head, experience and define your gender, based on how much you align (or don’t align) with what you understand the options for gender to be.
Attraction
is how you find yourself feeling drawn (or not drawn) to some other people, in sexual, romantic, and/or other ways (often categorized within gender).
Expression
is how you present gender (through your actions, clothing, and demeanor, to name a few), and how those presentations are viewed based on social expectations
Sex
is the physical traits you’re born with or develop that we think of as “sex characteristics,” as well as the sex you are assigned at birth.
