Future Perspectives Flashcards
What is NIPT?
non-invasive prenatal testing
What is aneuploidy?
the presence of an abnormal number of chromosomes in a cell
where is cell free DNA found in the maternal circulation?
Adipocytes + White blood cells
where is fetal cell free DNA found?
Placental cells -> trophoblasts (also in maternal circulation)
What is cell free DNA?
DNA that is non-ecapsulated in the blood stream
what cell free DNA does blood plasma contain?
maternal and fetal
what cell free DNA does the buffy coat contain?
maternal
why is a low fetal fraction bad?
increases risk of obtaining a false negative result
What fetal fraction is best?
0-4 = too low 4-8 = intermediate (|affects counting method) 8+ = best performance
What are Xenotransplants?
transplant of living cell/tissues/organs between species
What is germline gene therapy?
permanent transfer of a gene into a sperm/egg
what is somatic cell gene therapy?
transfer of genes only to affected cells
What 4 conditions has gene therapy helped cure?
- melanoma
- sick cell anaemia
- hereditary blindness
- severe combined immunodeficiencies
What Is a haplotype
Set of genetic determinants on a single chromosome
