Fuses and Earthing Flashcards
What is a surge?
Sudden increase in current
How does a fuse protect from high currents?
A fuse is a very thin piece of wire that is connected between 2 live wires. When a high current is passed through the live wire, it has to go through the fuse as well. This causes the fuse to heat up and break as a result, which breaks the connection to the second live wire.
How does a circuit breaker work and why are they superior to fuses.
They don’t have to be replaced. When the current is too high, they trip and break the circuit. But they can be reset.
If the live wire comes lose in an appliance and starts to touch the casing, what’s the danger?
IF a person were to touch the casing, they would receive an electrical shock.
