Further Trigonometry Flashcards
Right angle
90° angle (a quarter turn)
Tangent
A function used in trigonometry. Uses opposite and adjacent sides in right angled triangles
Angle
Where two lines meet at a point, this describes the rotation from one of the lines to the other.
Opposite
The side not touching the angle
Adjacent
The side next to the angle
Hypotenuse
The longest side in a right angled triangle (opposite the right angle)
Sine
A function used in trigonometry. Uses opposite and hypotenuse sides in right angled triangles
Cosine
A function used in trigonometry. Uses hypotenuse and adjacent sides in right angled triangles
Triangle
A three sided shape
Significant figures
The digits in a number that are needed to specify the number to a required degree of accuracy. Additional zero digits may also be needed.
Examples: To the nearest thousand, the numbers 125 000, 2 376 000 and 22 000 have 3, 4 and 2 significant figures respectively; to 3 significant figures 98.765 is written 98.8
Bearing
An angle measured from north and clockwise
Scalene triangle
A triangle where all sides are different and all angles are different
