Funtion of Cell Membrane Flashcards
What does a cell and its organelles need?
They need a regular supply of nutrients to provide raw materials and energy
What must substances do?
The substances must cross the barriers that surround cells
What does the cell membrane pass through?
It passes through molecules or irons but not others
What is the chemical reaction in the cell membrane?
The chemical reaction in the cell membrane is to produce waste that leaves the cell
How can the substances move across the cell membrane?
Substances can move across the cell membrane by diffusion
What is diffusion?
It is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
When is equilibrium achieved?
When the concentration on both sides of the cell membrane are the same
What is the movement of the equilibrium?
The movement of the equilibrium continues in both directions but at the same rate
What does hydrophilic head do?
It attracts water molecules
What does the hydrophobic tail do?
Doesn’t attract water molecules
What do cells contain?
They contain water and needs water to survive
What does osmosis do?
It is how the cell gains and loses its water
What is osmosis?
It is the diffusion of water
What will happen if an animal cell was left in pure water?
The cell will swell and eventually burst
What will happen if a plant cell was left in pure water?
The cell wall will prevent the cell from swelling
