FUNPHYS 3 - e-m radiation - Use in therapy and diagnosis Flashcards
What is e-m radiation?
E-M radiation is the complex interaction between changing Electric and Magnetic fields associated with the movement of charged particles.
What does an electromagnetic spectrum show?
An electromagnetic spectrum shows the different types of e-m radiation that exist.
List the order of the different types of waves in terms of increasing frequency and decreasing wavelength.
- TV & AM/FM Radio waves: 103 Hz
- Microwaves: 109 Hz
- Infrared Waves (Body heat): 1011 Hz
- Visible Light (Red->violet): 1015 Hz
- Ultraviolet: 1015 Hz
- X-rays: 1017 Hz
- Gamma Rays: 1019 Hz
What speed do the different types of em radiation travel at?
All em waves travel at the same speed. They travel at the speed of light: 3 x 108 m/s.
What is the wave speed equation?
Vwave = wavelength x frequency
What does em radiation consist of?
Photons
What is the relationship between the energy of a photon and frequency?
The higher the frequency of a wave, the higher it’ss energy. This is why gamma rays have more energy than radio waves.
What effect do em waves that have a frequency above 1 x 1015 Hz have on electrons? On body tissue?
Em waves above 1 x 1015 Hz can break bonds and ionize electrons of an atom, so they can cause DNA damage to the body. Em waves below 1 x 1015 Hz are non-ionizing and just emit heat.
