Fungi/Plants Part 3: Kingdom Plantae (Division Chlorophyta) Flashcards
What are the two ways Spirogyra can reproduce?
- Fragmentation
2. Conjugation
How does Fragmentation work in Spirogyra?
The algae breaks into two pieces and divide
How does Conjugation work in Spirogyra?
Two spirogyra filaments line up parallel to each other and exchange nuclear material into one of the cells. That cell becomes a Zygospore. The Zygospore will later form new filaments by cell division.
Why are algae significant to humans?
As the human population grows, we may have to turn to algae as a food source. They also are used in carrageenan, algin, agar, and fertilizer.
What are the cycles that algae are involved in?
Algae are involved in the Carbon, Water, and Nitrogen cycle.
True or False: Algae are primary producers and produce 90% of all oxygen.
False: Algae produce 50% of all oxygen.
