A

characteristics:

  • molds that use keratin as nutritional source
  • not dimorphic

Disease:
Dermatophytoses

Diagnosis:
Sabouraud’s agar -> mycelium and asexual spores

Treatment:
Topical agent such as clotrimazole is used

Prevention
Skin should be kept dry and cool

Sporothrix Schenckii

A

Characteristics:

  • thermally dimorphic
  • mold in the soil, yeast in the body 37oC

Habitat: soil & vegetation

Disease: sporotrichosis

Diagnosis:

  • cigar shaped budding yeasts visible in pus
  • culture on Sabouraud’s agar shows typical morphology

Treatment: Itraconazole

Prevention: Skin should be protected when gardening
