Fungi Causing Pneumonia Flashcards
pneumonia
infection of one or both of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. the air sacs are filled with pus
types of pneumonia
Lobar pneumonia: affects one or more sections/lobes of the lungs
Bronchopneumonia: affects patches throughout both lungs.
symptoms of pneumonia
bluish color to lips and fingers
cough with green, yellow or bloody mucous
fever and sweating
malaise
dyspnea
sharp or stabbing chest pain
tests to confirm pneumonia diagnosis
chest x-ray
blood tests (CBC, blood culture)
sputum culture
pneumonia complications
ARDS
lung abscesses
respiratory failure
sepsis
histoplasma capsulatum transmission
inhalation of dust particles from soil contaminated with bird or bat droppings
clinical presentation of histoplasmosis resembles?
TB
histoplasmosis clinicals
1)Pneumonia: lesions calcify, can be seen on chest x-ray (weight loss, night sweats, low grade fever)
2)Disseminated: can occur in almost any organ, esp. lung, spleen or liver
lung morphology in histoplasmosis
granulomas
areas to necrosis which coalesce to produce areas of consolidation
blastomycosis caused by
blastomyces dermatitdis
blastomycosis clinicals
1)Pneumonia: lesions rarely calcify
2)Disseminated: presents with weight loss, night sweats, lung involvement and skin ulcers
3)Cutaneous: skin ulcers
lesions of blastomycosis
suppurative granulomas
blastomycosis transmission
soil or rotten wood
respiratory transmission
coccidioides immitis causes
coccidioidomycosis
coccidioidomycosis clinical
1)Pneumonia
2)Disseminated: can affect the lungs, skin, bones and meninges.
