Fungi and Lichens Flashcards
Where do fungi spend most of their lives
living as spores, or tiny filaments living among other things
disease causing fungi
pathogenic
importance of fungi
- critical fro decomposition and nutrient cycling/ breaking down organic compounds so they can be used again in living systems.2. form symbioses called mycorrhizae with about 80% of all plants for update of water and minerals 3. used in biotechnology for research since they are closely related to animals 4. food and medicine, penicillin the most famous
fungi life cycle
zygotic basically- spend most life in haploid(dikaryotic n+n) stage, and once it forms diploid, almost immediately undergoes meiosis to form haploid spores.
what are lichens
mutualistic partnership of a fungus with a green algae and/or cyanobacteria
lichen types
crustoce (crusty) fruticose (shrubby) foliose (leaf- like)
fungal filaments
hyphae
network of hyphae
mycelium
saprotrophic fungi
fungi that decay dead organic matter
zygomycota
bread molds
basidiomycota
basidiomycetes, mushrooms, toadstools, rusts, smuts, puffballs, shelf fungi
mushroom division
cap, stipe, gills
Ascomycota,
cup fungi, sac fungi, morels, truffles, yeast, dermatophytes ( athlete’s foot, jock itch, etc)
Largestest phylum of fungi, consisting of more then 32,000 species
Ascomycetes
conidia
asexual spores of a fungus, often produced on special stalks or at the ends of specialized hyphae
