Q

Have an appreciation of now fungi can potentially cause harm to a human

A
  1. Mycotoxicoses
    - Production of metabolites that are toxic
    - May result in breathing problems, hallucination, vomiting, diarrhoea hepatic and renal failure
    - but some secondary metabolites are medically useful:Penicillin
  2. Fungal allergies
    - Fungi can generate spores which are frequently inhaled
    - May induce a variety of allergic diseases: rhinitis, dermatitis, asthma, aspergillosis
  3. Fungal mycoses ( infections)
    - classified by level of tissue affected, superficial ( surface layers of skin), sub-cutaneous (dermis layers of skin)
    - systemic/ deep invasive ( organs)

Q

Be aware of the differences between opportunistic and obligate fungal pathogens

A

System mycoses
• can be the result of an opportunistic pathogen
-Immunocompromised host
-Ubiquitous in nature

• obligate pathogen

  • Well defined geographical area
  • establish infection in ‘healthy’ host
