3
Q
Have an appreciation of now fungi can potentially cause harm to a human
A
- Mycotoxicoses
- Production of metabolites that are toxic
- May result in breathing problems, hallucination, vomiting, diarrhoea hepatic and renal failure
- but some secondary metabolites are medically useful:Penicillin - Fungal allergies
- Fungi can generate spores which are frequently inhaled
- May induce a variety of allergic diseases: rhinitis, dermatitis, asthma, aspergillosis - Fungal mycoses ( infections)
- classified by level of tissue affected, superficial ( surface layers of skin), sub-cutaneous (dermis layers of skin)
- systemic/ deep invasive ( organs)
4
Q
Be aware of the differences between opportunistic and obligate fungal pathogens
A
System mycoses
• can be the result of an opportunistic pathogen
-Immunocompromised host
-Ubiquitous in nature
• obligate pathogen
- Well defined geographical area
- establish infection in ‘healthy’ host

Q
Have a broad awareness of treatment options for fungal infections and the issues of toxicity associated with antifungals
