Fungal Pathogens Flashcards
Fungi
Eukaryotic: nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
Cell wall made up of chitin, beta-glucan, and mannan
Cell membrane with ergosterol
Used for food, food production, and pharmeceuticals
Pathogenic Fungi in Humans
Yeasts - Candida, Cryptococcus
Molds - Aspergillus, Pseudoallescheria
Dimorphics - Can switch between yeasts and molds
Yeasts
Unicellular, 3-10 microns
Replicate by asexual budding or fission
Can form pseudohyphae (connected budding cells) or true hyphae (elongated cells)
Candida, Crytococcus
Molds
Multicellular
Comprised of hyphae, myeclium, and spores
Involved in decomposition of organic matter
Aspergillus, Pseudallescheria
Superficial Fungal Infections
Caused by dermatophytes (Trichophyton and Microsporum)
Tinea corpis AKA ringworm
Tinea pedis AKA athlete’s foot
Tinea capitis AKA cradle cap
Topical treatments
