Symptoms?
Discolouration of the nail (whitish to yellow-brown, black, green discolouration)
Brittle nail and pieces may break off
Thickening of nail
Distorted in shape
Pain and discomfort around the nail.
Questions?
Have you experienced any pain or discomfort on/around the affect nails?
When did you first notice the symptoms?
Has the symptoms spread?
How many toenails / fingernails are affected?
Could you describe the nails appearance?
How does the nail feel? Is it brittle? Does the texture/thickness vary?
Are the toes inflamed or fingers?
What sort of footwear do you usually wear?
Is anyone else you live with have the same symptoms?
Have you had any other skin infections?
Red flags?
Refer to podiatrist:
- Thickened nail causing pain/discomfort when walking or using hands.
- Nail trauma due to footwear
- Deformed nails affecting other toes
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you should be referred to a dermatologist:
- Primary care treatment unsuccessful
- Co-existent nail disease
- Immunocompromised
Treatment?
Amorolfine (5%w/w)
- Generic Nail Lacquer
- Curanail
- Omicur
Apply 1-2 times a week for 6 months to treat fingernails and for toe nails 9-12 months (review at 3 month intervals) apply to infected nails after filling and cleansing, allow to dry for approximately 3 minutes
Maximum of 2 affected nails / not licensed for under 12 years

File the nail surface once a week, disposing of the file after its’ use, before applying the liquid daily to the affected nail for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks the liquid can then be applied once weekly for 9 months.
Shoe Spray:
Hold the spray nozzle up right into the inside of the shoe and spray 2 or 3 times. Allow shoes to dry before putting them on. Respray shoes every day after use, alongside your treatment for Athlete’s foot or fungal nail.
